Marriott hack hits 500 million Starwood guests
According to the hotel chain’s statement, the guest reservation data base of the Starwood division of the hotel chain had been compromised by an authorized party. It was previously been said that an attacker was found in the internal investigation due to which they had been able to access the network since the year 2014.
It has been said by the company that it will further inform the customers and especially those whose records were present in the database. Starwood was bought by the Marriott International in the year 2016 which created the largest hotel chain of the world that has the total number of 5800 properties.
The hotel brands of the Starwood include Sheraton, Four points and W Hotels. A separate reservation system is being used by the Marriott branded hotels for a totally different network.
According to the system of Marriott, an alert had been passed out by the internal security tool which showed that there was someone who was trying to access the database of the Starwood. Once the complete investigation has been done, it was discovered that there was an unauthorized party which copied and encrypted that certain information.
The statement said that it once believed that there is the database which contains the record of more than 500 million customers. Among the 500 million customers, out of 327 million guests were those where included combination of the name, address, phone number, email address, account information, passport number, gender, date of birth, departure and arrival information of the customers.
